ETIC-Innovation Center (ETIC) is a private non-profit entity that was founded in June of 2008. It is a cooperative and it has as promoter partners: Mondragon, GAIA and the Gipuzkoa Deputy; as collaborating partners: Ikerlan, University of Deusto and Mondragon Unibertsitatea; as client partners: Fagor Electrónica and LKS and, finally, working partners.

CITyFiED project aims to develop a replicable, systemic and integrated strategy to adapt European cities and urban ecosystems into the smart city of the future, focusing on reducing the energy demand and GHG emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy sources by developing and implementing innovative technologies and methodologies for building renovation, smart grid and district heating networks and their interfaces with ICTs and Mobility. This strategy has the following pillars:

1. Large scale demonstrations: three holistic district renovations at Laguna-Valladolid (Spain), Soma (Turkey) and Lund (Sweden), deploying innovative and cost-effective technologies for a high increase of the overall energy efficiency and a relevant reduction of the environmental impact. A deep retrofitting of the buildings, an innovative district heating and cooling concept and a set of solutions to improve the grid management and increase the distributed electricity generation are going to be carried out in order to achieve powerful models suitable for replication across Europe.

2. Maximization of the replication potential: organization of a cluster of cities. More than 15 cities have already signed a letter expressing their interest to be part of this cluster.

3. Development of innovative and cost-effective methodologies and procedures for planning, deploying and replicating energy efficient district retrofitting actions, resulting in low energy and zero emission cities and urban areas, deploying HVAC facilities based on a district scale and also integrating distributed electricity generation.

4. Dissemination: It is also foreseen to give a clear message to professionals, academic audiences and the citizens in general, about the benefits of the energy efficiency in the city environment, but also addressing complementary issues such as mobility, in order to modify the user behaviour towards a more sustainable awareness.

SmartEnCity

The SmartEnCity Project proposal, described in detail in the following pages, takes advantage of this approach in its work structure, addressing these main identified aspects in its scope. Smarten City’s work plan is organized to develop and demonstrate a highly adaptable and replicable systemic approach towards urban transformation into sustainable, smart and resource-efficient urban environments in Europe. This approach will be laid out and implemented initially in the three Lighthouse demonstrators, to be further refined and replicated with the development of Integrated Urban Plans (IUPs) in both Lighthouse and Follower Cities. The ultimate goal of these combined actions is to move European cities towards the Smart Zero Carbon emissions vision. This goal should be achieved through the combined deployment of a number of Europe-wide replicable strategies aimed at:

Reducing energy demand through the use of innovative technologies in building retrofitting, sustainable and clean transport systems and intelligent control ICT; as well as raising awareness in all involved stakeholders.

Maximizing renewable energy supply, through the use of locally available sources.

The demonstration activities of SmartEnCity are located in three European Cities: Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), Tartu (Estonia) and Sonderborg (Denmark), Three medium to small sized cities in Europe, sharing a solid background and capable to offer lessons from outstanding accomplishment in specific areas linked to the scope of the SmartEnCity project:

• Vitoria Gasteiz, the administrative capital of the Basque Country, in northern Spain, has a population of 240.000 inhabitants, in an extension of 276.81 km2. A compact, moderately dense city, Vitoria-Gasteiz has an extensive background in planning and implementation of environmental policies and as a result was awarded as European Green Capital in 2012. A flat and walkable city surrounded by a “green belt”, and often regarded as a model in sustainable mobility planning, Vitoria-Gasteiz is committed to become a Carbon neutral city by 2050. Within this city strategy to become greener, energy efficiency, renewable energy, low carbon mobility and smart infrastructures are key elements towards which the city commits significant resources.

ETIC-Embedded Technologies Innovation Center (ETIC) particpates in a consortium of 50 partners, developing new technology to improve remote management processes across multiple industries and ETIC is participating in the Automotive Domain. The project started in 2014 and the consortium group expects to launch a set of products in March 2017. Within this project ETIC has focused on developing a wireless solution for a connected electric car.

The main tasks carried out by ETIC in the DEWI project have been the development of the Driver Car Interface (DCI) device to manage all the information coming from the vehicle itself and also from the external services. The DCI application is designed for tablet or smartphone as HMI interface to manage all the functionalities at the car. In order to identify the user, an NFC identification mechanism has been developed to ensure a secure connection between the car and the user's HMI. The user identifies himself by using his tablet or smartphone in the dashboard of the car through an NFC identification between the device of the user and the car. The DCI also has a BLE 4.0 communication that it is used to read all data from ECUs (Electronic Control Units), sensors and control units inside the car. With this BLE 4.0 protocol, the DCI is able to receive in real time all notifications such as the battery level, bus voltage ... and other sensor’s values of the car. The DCI is connected to external services by telephone or Wi-Fi connection. When the car informs that the charge of the battery is lower than 25%, the DCI will find an electric station in the route to charge the battery. DCI also integrates maps and route management via geolocation.

ETIC has contributed in all the tasks developed in DEWI with a very good collaboration between all the participants within the same working group.

El objeto principal del proyecto es aplicar diferentes técnicas de IA al proceso de corte de chapa por láser, incluyendo desde el análisis del programa a realizar hasta las estrategias de corte en función del material, pasando por el ajuste óptimo de los accionamientos para cada pieza en una máquina dada.

El resultado debe ser un algoritmo, sistema de clasificación o similar que, ejecutándose en el CNC, analice la geometría de la pieza a cortar, el material de la chapa, las características del láser y su óptica y las indicaciones del usuario y proporcione una parametrización de todos los elementos variables que optimice el tiempo y/o la calidad del corte.

El proyecto parte de un proyecto anterior, FATIMA, en que a partir de las simulaciones de muchos programas en muy diferentes parametrizaciones se clasifica un programa pieza para que el tiempo de mecanizado y la geometría obtenida sean óptimos para las necesidades del usuario.

La ingente cantidad de datos (>5 Terabytes) producidos en el proyecto FATIMA son de utilidad en este proyecto, ya que los programas se clasificarán en función de los resultados obtenidos en él y dispondremos de una base que restringe el número de ensayos a hacer en la máquina concreta en que se realizarán los ensayos.

El objetivo general del proyecto AA@ThP - Advanced Analytics applied to thermal Processing (Joining and Additive Manufacturing) es desarrollar una plataforma base y un conjunto de servicios que permitan dotar de herramientas a las empresas de fabricación para la mejora de sus procesos productivos y la generación de nuevos productos -servicios orientados al mantenimiento predictivo y a la monitorización remota. Por ello, el objetivo principal del Proyecto AA@ThP será el de la aplicación de diferentes técnicas de IA (algoritmos inteligentes) utilizando la visión termográfica (machine visión – visión artificial), que den soporte a la mejora en el proceso de soldadura láser de alta cadencia.

Como consecuencia del AA@ThP se va a desarrollar una plataforma que permita a las empresas industriales:

• La ingesta de toda la información sobre el estado del proceso en las máquinas con los CPS (Cyber Physical Systems) y los sistemas IoT (Internet of Things).

• Captación de los datos e información relevante de sensores, máquinas, cámaras…

• Agregación de datos externos (Open Data y otras fuentes).

• Almacenamiento en bases de datos (estructuradas, no-estructuradas).

• Extracción de KPI-s a partir de los datos.

Description:  Application that simulates a dressing room. You can wear different clothes using Kinect very easily. You can change clothes by using gestures or voice.

Scope of application:  In clothing stores, gives the opportunity to see different combinations of clothing without having to try . May also serve to see the catalog of clothing, for example, on the street through the window of the shop or in own home.

Description:  Mobile Application about hiking and tourstic trails, in both rural and city areas. Showing closest routes or our favorites and their characteristics. Description:  Solution for the automobile inspeired in a market of applications. It consists of two applications, the first is oriented to tourism and shows routes and points of interest, making turn GPS functions. The second is aimed at fleet management, real-time assignation of vehicles and services, based on user requests.

Bubbles with Kinect

Description:  Converts the user in a cartoon character alive by Kinect. Each time a person passes in front of the device, it will be on a screen with a bubble in which a sentence can be read.

Scope of application:  Digital signage, retail, advertising, ... The main objective is to capture the attention of people, which is ideal for use in any act or public event.

Interesting elements:  Augmented reality in real time. Easily reusable for different areas.

Surveillance with Kinect

Description:  A personal security system using Kinect. Capture every intruder that goes into the monitored area and send the photos of it by email instantly.

Scope of application:  Places that require simple , private and personal monitoring.

Interesting elements:  This is an automated system where you do not need to be anyone envisioning the video. With Kinect technology can operate in areas with or without light. Setting a Smartphone with the same e-mail to receive the photos, makes it possible to see when intruders come in.

Food Management

Description:  Application for managing household food through voice. You can manage the food from the refrigerator, freezer and storage, see different recipes and make a shopping list. This application is able to alert the user to the food will spoil, helps locate food in different compartments and can recommend recipes you can do with food available at home. And all this using only voice commands.

Scope of application:  This management system is aimed at home. Thanks to the voice recognition can give orders while they are getting into purchases. It is especially useful in homes where food ends up wasting a lot.

Interesting elements:  Using this application can result in savings . First, it does food not being wasted. And second, because using the search command reduces the time in which the doors of the refrigerator and freezer are open, improving the efficiency of the appliance, and therefore saving on the electricity bill.

Description:  Solution for guests of a hotel, who receive a tablet with custom content when registering at reception. The customer can among other things: call the room service, booking of the hotel (restaurants, hairdresser, spa, etc.), read news and information about events and activities at the hotel.

Aquarium with Kinect

Description:  It is an application that has the functionality of an information panel. The aquarium is created with XNA. Fish swim in it and thanks to the Kinect sensor can be caught. Each time the user takes a fish jumps a new window and in it you can see a related story with ETIC. And thanks to the "Head Tracking" whole perspective changes aquarium depending on the user's position, creating a sense of 3D without using glasses.

Description:  System for efficient management of urban resources using sensor networks and lo power radio frequency. Based on different sensors, various aspects such as lighting or traffic are controlled by acting on streetlight or traffic lights. It can be applied in a single street or extended through various or even entire cities.

Interesting elements:  Energy efficiency, remote control, wireless sensor network for monitoring environmental parameters.

Description:  Solution for users of public spaces, which on entering the premises may find the necessary information in the totem. In this totem are various items, such as campus maps, calendar and information about events, business directory based on site, with extensive information and accessibility to the website of each company, possibility to register events using QR code, video viewer, etc ...

Vertical Garden

Description:  Autonomous vertical garden with capacity for self-diagnosis of State and actions according to the same decision. It contains a system of self-watering able to warn the need for irrigation. It is independent, but it adds the ability to be governed remotely through a simple interface showing the status of the garden and the possibilities of action that they have over it, as irrigation instant, changing the frequency of irrigation... In addition we must add the possibility of creation of a network of gardens controllable distance, within the same building or even Street

Digital Signage with Kinect

Description:  Digital Signage application developed to inform, consult and entertain different users. It is controlled using gestures through the Kinect sensor. You can watch videos, read the latest news, view information about companies Garaia or play minigames using your body. Depending on the content you want to add, can be used in places such as entrances to facilities, coffee areas or malls.

Set Top Box / Home Automation

Description:  Add to television utility beyond entertainment. Allows the use of TV and the remote control as a household device that offers more new features to the user. As such interaction has been developed with the Fagor home automation network. Functionality which allows to know status and command automation systems, appliances, ... from the TV with the remote control.

Scope of application:  Home, hotel room, hospital room, ... any environment where the user can watch TV and manipulated using the remote control.

Interesting elements:  Configuration of a set top box, embedded system with Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system, including Media Center functionality. The ability to interact with the remote control.

iLAND - Home care

Description:  This demonstrator attempts to resolve or respond to problems that may arise in the home of an elderly person who lives alone. It monitors the activities carried out by the user and the events that occur at home, apply some reasoning and act when unusual or dangerous situations arise.

Scope of application:  Home, health, elderly people

Interesting elements:  It is a network of embedded systems at home that is dynamically reconfigured to provide a timely response to an event or danger.

Description:  Windows 8 store app developed using Open Data. Kulturklik, Basque Culture Interactive Space, aims to be an open and shared platform with all the stakeholders of Basque culture, for the diffusion and possible commercialization of their activities and valuable content suited to the new channels of interaction and communication. To that end, will work for Basque culture being constructed over open perspectives in all its forms and expressions; with proper respect to both, the rights of creators and to the demands of citizens. The purpose of this application is to access the content of the KulturKlik platform filtering the published events by citizen’s interests: dates and type of activity basically. This app is available in the Windows Store.
